I wasn't even trying to shop for boots

...but this pair of boots practically assaulted me from the endless.com web site.

They are practical in the sense that they would be warm and cute and would probably last me for many, many winters, since I'd probably only be able to wear them on the weekends. We'd go sledding! Tromping through the snow! My feet would never get cold!

Therein lies the rub. I'd probably only be able to wear them on the weekends--and I really don't have $150 to spend on recreational footwear. Sounds to me like a great GIFT!

How lucky are we that Halloween costumes have gotten so easy--and so adorable? Here's what Arlo picked out, from the Old Navy web site, for his Halloween costume this year. Anticipating that our time will be in short supply this fall (what with the imminent arrival of the new Knights baby), I decided to just let Arlo pick out a "boughten" costume instead of trying to dream up/ make up something creative and fabulous on my own. (Also note, Old Navy is having a 25%-off sale right now on lots of baby and kid stuff, INCLUDING the Halloween stuff.)

I can't wait to see it--not only is it totally cute, but it's made of fleece, so it should also be easy, comfy, and warm for Arlo to wear on what often turns out to be a chilly autumn night. Looks like all I need to do now is find some fireman boots for him to wear ... though I'm sure we could get away with just putting on his sneakers ... or his usual rain boots, which always draw loads of compliments:

Watch the Birdies

Before Arlo was born, I obsessed mildly over finding or making a brilliant, stylish, intellectually stimulating, and affordable mobile to hang over his crib. I didn't really succeed, though we did end up receiving a very sweet, Scandinavian-simple, wooden butterfly mobile in primary colors from my sister and her family in Denmark--which not only graced Arlo's crib airspace, but also did double duty as our Christmas tree topper (suspended from the ceiling over our plastic Salvation Army tree) last year.

This probably won't excite you...

...but it excites me. At left is a knitting needle set, with its very own organizer jacket, that features interchangeable tips and cables for a really wide range of projects.

If you could see what my current hodgepodge of needles looks like--straight and circular, various sizes, colors, and materials--crammed into an organizer that the collection has far outgrown, you would understand the appeal of such a no-nonsense approach.
